CYL 100 WORDS WW1 PROJECT A MASSIVE SUCCESS

MUSIC CHARITY JOINS FORCES WITH STYLO G – CHALLENGING YOUNG PEOPLE IN LEWISHAM TO WRITE “100 WORDS OF WAR”

• Innovative WW1 project sees young participants mentored by MOBO-winning reggae artist Stylo G alongside acclaimed poets Winsome ‘Lyrical Healer’ Duncan and Suley Sauce

• Tributes to the victims of WW1 to be performed at a special Remembrance Sunday event at the Deptford Lounge (November 9th) and transformed into artworks by illustrator Karl Speller

• Event led by local charity Community Youth London as part of the Arts Council England-supported “Expressions of War” project – aiming to use art and music to engage young hard-to-reach audiences with the 100th anniversary commemorations of WW1

This Remembrance Sunday (November 9th), 12 young people from Lewisham have been challenged to perform their own 100-word tributes to the victims of World War One as part of an innovative UK-wide initiative.

Led by the Bermondsey-based music and media charity Community Youth London (CYL), their performance of “100 Words of War” follows a masterclass at Deptford Lounge, where the aspiring young rappers and poets have been mentored by Stylo G (recent winner of Best Reggae Act at the 2014 MOBO Awards) alongside poets Winsome ‘Lyrical Healer’ Duncan and Suley Sauce.

As well as developing their writing and presentation skills, the young participants have used this experience to research and explore classic texts of the 1914-18 era including writers such of Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon – as well studying letters from soldiers at the Imperial War Museum.
